Description

As a Starship Artist at DECA, you will be a key contributor to the game world's visual creation. You'll collaborate with artists, designers, and engineers to model, texture, and implement spaceships within the game engine. If you're passionate about hard surface and sci-fi vehicle modeling, and possess the creative skills to bring these designs to life, we encourage you to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Create visually compelling and detailed 3D models of starships based on a well-known IP.
  • Develop 3D models from initial concepts or references, demonstrating an understanding of design goals, to produce final, game-ready assets.
  • Generate game-ready textures and materials using our proprietary material pipeline, focusing on realism and visual appeal.
  • Collaborate with technical artists and engineers to optimize assets for in-game performance while preserving artistic integrity.
  • Work closely with art directors, designers, and other artists to ensure starship art aligns with the game's overall vision and IP requirements.
  • Partner with the design team to explore innovative ship, combat, and power designs.
  • Provide constructive feedback on artwork from other team members to maintain quality standards.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation and asset libraries for starship art assets.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in 3D art creation for video games, particularly MMOs or open-world titles.
  • Strong hard surface modeling skills, including the ability to create high-detail hero props.
  • Ability to accurately translate complex objects from 2D concept art or references, with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in industry-standard 3D modeling and texturing software (e.g., Maya, 3ds Max, ZBrush, Substance Painter, Photoshop).
  • Familiarity with modeling and UV unwrapping using trim sheet textures is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of lighting, composition, and color theory.
  • Knowledge of game development pipelines and experience with various game engines, including in-house engines, is a plus.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams.
  • Ability to provide feedback to external vendors (outsourcers).
  • Solid understanding of MMO games, storytelling, and world-building.

Note: If you feel strongly that you have what it takes for this role but don’t check 100% of the boxes—that’s okay—we encourage you to apply anyway and highlight what you can bring to the table.
