Reporting to the Creative Director, you will oversee and lead design projects from inception to completion, confidently managing project timelines and stakeholder relationships. Collaborating closely with the Senior Brand Manager, you will further develop and maintain the visual identity systems for Wikimedia, the Wikimedia Foundation, and Wikipedia. You will champion exceptional design standards and brand consistency to ensure the timely delivery of high-quality work.

A master of design and brand building, you will enjoy designing across a diverse range of touchpoints, from small ad-hoc requests and identity toolkits to large-scale global products and campaigns. Beyond hands-on design, you will be comfortable overseeing and managing design vendors on various projects.

Ultimately, your work will aim to express the essence of Wikipedia and Wikimedia, with a vision that resonates with individuals worldwide who seek free knowledge.

You are responsible for

  • Exceptional Design Standard and Brand Stewardship: Upholding the highest craft standards and meticulous attention to detail across all design touchpoints, including social media designs, toolkits, and global campaigns.
  • End-to-End Project Oversight: Managing creative projects from initiation to completion, including timelines and stakeholder communication.
  • Design Thinking for Problem Solving: Applying design thinking methodologies to address complex challenges presented by Foundation teams, partners, and volunteers.
  • Championing Creative Excellence: Driving for better creative, design, and branding outcomes, inspiring both the Foundation and external audiences.
  • Brand Guideline Ambassador: Safeguarding and further developing our brand guidelines.
  • Brand Asset Management: Collaborating with the brand team to maintain a comprehensive library of brand assets, materials, and guidelines for use by Foundation staff, volunteers, and global partners.
  • Fostering a Collaborative Environment: Working closely with the Creative Director, fellow creative team members, and stakeholders across the Foundation, from Product Design to Fundraising, to collaboratively solve problems and shape work as a unified team.
  • Vendor Management and Art Direction: Managing and art directing external design partners, ensuring that delivered work aligns with the brief, meets quality standards, and is delivered on time.
  • Coaching and Education: Educating, coaching, and inspiring colleagues, volunteers, partners, and collaborators on the correct application of brand materials.
  • Positive and Solution-Oriented Approach: Maintaining a positive, problem-solving attitude in all endeavors.
  • Reflecting Wikimedia Foundation Values: Embodying the Wikimedia Foundation’s core values in your work.
  • Collaborative Problem Solving: Solving challenges through collaboration, demonstrating a positive attitude, and communicating honestly, clearly, and with empathy.
  • Stewardship of the Wikimedia Mission: Embracing the Wikimedia mission to build the sum of all knowledge and champion human diversity.

You have these skills

  • 6+ years of professional design experience.
  • Deep understanding of fundamental design principles.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and craft, with a commitment to delivering the highest quality output.
  • Proven ability to manage project timelines and oversee projects from start to finish.
  • Confidence and experience in managing external design partners.
  • Highly collaborative individual who thrives in a transparent and collaborative environment, capable of working effectively within a team with diverse demographic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Intellectual curiosity and adaptability, enabling you to creatively tackle difficult and ambiguous problems.
  • A strong sense of creative experimentation and innovation, with the autonomy to iterate and refine based on your expertise and experience.

These skills are a bonus

  • Experience working in global contexts and diverse markets, including partnering with international vendors and engaging global audiences.
  • Experience working with brands that have community stakeholders, including advising global volunteer communities.

Note: If you feel strongly that you have what it takes for this role but don’t check 100% of the boxes—that’s okay—we encourage you to apply anyway and highlight what you can bring to the table.
