The Wikimedia Foundation is seeking a highly collaborative Senior Product Manager to champion our work on Abstract Wikipedia, a groundbreaking project with the ambitious goal of increasing access to encyclopedic knowledge for more people, in more languages.We are deeply committed to making knowledge freely available to everyone, globally. Imagine a world where Wikipedia articles can be written once, in an abstract form, and then seamlessly translated into any language through a community-driven natural language system. Abstract Wikipedia is this visionary project. The technical foundation enabling this future is Wikifunctions, a multilingual, open-source catalog of code functions that empowers anyone to use, remix, test, and learn.
As the Senior Product Manager, you will be the driving force behind turning the ambitious vision of Abstract Wikipedia into tangible global impact. This is a truly one-of-a-kind opportunity to shape the future of the internet and radically expand access to free knowledge for all. You will collaborate with a dynamic, international team operating across time zones from UTC-4 to UTC+1.
You are responsible for
- Crafting a comprehensive product roadmap that strategically balances short-term execution priorities with long-term strategic objectives.
- Cultivating strong alignment among diverse stakeholders and the community to clearly define and effectively drive the product vision and overall strategy.
- Taking full ownership of the end-to-end product lifecycle, from initial ideation and thorough discovery to successful launch and ongoing iteration.
- Employing both qualitative and quantitative research methods to inform critical decisions, proactively identify emerging opportunities, and rigorously measure the impact of product initiatives.
- Developing a deep understanding of our community's evolving needs, iteratively releasing features to consistently deliver value and rigorously validate key hypotheses.
- Establishing and continuously refining efficient product development processes and championing industry best practices within the team.
- Applying structured and analytical thinking to all stages of product discovery, effective prioritization, and sound decision-making.
- Leading the strategic prioritization of new products and services, as well as the ongoing management and refinement of our product backlog.
- Clearly communicating trade-offs to facilitate informed product decisions and ensure the team maintains forward momentum.
- Effectively communicating a compelling and clear product vision to both internal teams and external audiences.
Skills and Experience
- A minimum of 5 years of proven product management experience within software development environments.
- A well-developed yet adaptable approach to product development, with the demonstrated ability to tailor methodologies to best suit the specific needs of our team and the broader organization.
- Demonstrated experience in developing and refining product management frameworks, showcasing a strong understanding of product strategy formulation, effective execution, and sound decision-making processes.
- A track record of successfully breaking down complex and ambiguous projects into clear, actionable tasks, with a strong bias towards proactive implementation.
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly and proactively communicate plans, progress, and results to a diverse range of stakeholders and collaborators.
- Excellent follow-up skills, meticulous attention to detail, strong time management abilities, and effective project management skills.
- Proven ability to interact effectively and cultivate productive working relationships with management, peers, and community members.
- A genuine interest in and the ability to work effectively remotely with a geographically distributed team operating across multiple time zones.
- Comfortable navigating evolving requirements and shifting priorities within a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
Additionally, we’d love it if you have
- Experience with natural language processing (NLP), computational linguistics, or knowledge management technologies.
- Experience with multilingual products or platforms, and a strong understanding of internationalization (i18n) and localization (l10n) best practices.
- Active experience editing Wikimedia projects.
