Description
The Wikimedia Foundation is seeking an experienced and collaborative Engineering Manager to lead our Trust and Safety Product Team. In this pivotal role, you will directly manage a talented engineering team and partner closely with a diverse range of collaborators and stakeholders to execute complex and impactful projects within the Trust and Safety domain. Your team will be at the forefront of building solutions that safeguard our global communities, users, and systems from various forms of attacks and abuse, while ensuring adherence to crucial regulatory requirements.The Trust and Safety Product team operates within a multifaceted stakeholder ecosystem. You will work in close collaboration with key functionaries such as the Wikimedia Stewards and on-wiki administrators on critical initiatives related to user privacy and the development of robust anti-abuse tooling and technology. Collaboration with the Trust and Safety and Legal teams will be essential to address evolving regulatory compliance needs. Furthermore, you will partner with the Research, SRE, and Security teams on vital infrastructure projects designed to tackle abuse at scale.
Responsibilities
- Effectively manage a complex stakeholder environment encompassing other teams within and outside of the department, as well as individuals from the steward and functionary communities.
- Coach engineers at various experience levels, fostering their professional growth, assisting them in setting personal development goals, and providing mentorship in software engineering best practices where applicable.
- Ensure the timely and successful delivery of team commitments by effectively managing resources and project schedules.
- Drive and optimize team processes and meetings to foster effective and efficient collaboration within the engineering team.
- Communicate proactively, positively, and effectively both within your team and with external collaborators and stakeholders.
- Efficiently triage incoming bugs, incidents, and ad-hoc requests, ensuring timely and appropriate responses.
- Collaborate with other technical decision-makers to identify key long-term investment areas, such as strategic migrations or the adoption of innovative technologies.
- Effectively manage and navigate dependencies across various engineering and product teams.
- Accurately assess the scope and complexity of technical tasks, carefully examine patches and alerts, and judiciously determine problem severity and solution complexity.
Requirements
- Proven experience leading or managing a full-stack engineering team.
- Demonstrated experience in building a diverse, multi-national, and remote-first team culture.
- A consistent track record of success throughout all stages of the engineering process and product lifecycle, leading to significant and measurable impact.
- Willingness and ability to travel internationally up to 2-3 times per year for team gatherings and collaboration.
- Your working hours will need to overlap with the UTC+2 to UTC-7 time zones to effectively accommodate the global distribution of your team members.
Additionally, we’d love it if you have
- Experience managing organizational interaction with a vibrant community of volunteer technical contributors.
- Experience contributing to or managing open-source projects and communities, or familiarity with open governance models (e.g., IETF, W3C).
- Familiarity with the challenges and best practices in anti-abuse and security work on large-scale online platforms.
- Familiarity with the landscape of regulatory compliance for online platforms.
- Experience working effectively with internationally distributed teams or organizations.
- Exceptional ability to communicate nuanced technical problems with clarity, empathy, and care.
